Elmwood Kindergarten Classes Visit Patterson’s Fruit Farm

On Wednesday, September 27th, 2017, the kindergarten classes from Elmwood Elementary School took a field trip to Patterson’s Fruit Farm and Fun Fest in Chesterland, Ohio. The students were able to see the apple orchard up close and learn about the parts of the tree and the apple. The tour guides did an excellent job of asking the students questions to keep them engaged and to teach them about the apple farm. Students enjoyed learning about how the farmers plant and harvest the apples as well as about the processes that go into making sure the apples are ready to go to market.

It was a hot day and the students were allowed to see where they take the apples to keep them refrigerated. In this part of the farm, there were large crates of different types of apples as well as crates of apple cider. The students were excited to see how tall the crates were stacked and how many apples were in the building.

The students were taught about the seasons of the year and what happens to the apple trees and the apples during each season. The students sat very quietly as each tour guide spoke and were a very good representation of the Garfield Heights City Schools. The students also listened to a brief presentation by Johnny Appleseed while they ate an apple from the apple farm. The apples were sweet and juicy. The students really loved them.

During the tour the students were given the opportunity to taste the yummy apple cider made from the apples grown at the farm. Many students had never tried apple cider. The tour guides taught the students the difference between apple cider and apple juice.
