6th Grade Overnight Field Trip

Who: Any 6th grade student at Garfield Heights Middle School. Space is limited.

Administration reserves the right to revoke any student’s’ privilege to attend.

What: Students will embark on an exciting learning adventure. The award winning program focuses on the Cuyahoga River watershed and the history of the Cuyahoga Valley, as well as sustainable design and living practices. Classrooms are the beautiful outdoor spaces at the CVEEC including meadows, ponds, and forests as well as an indoor lab and classroom space. There will be emphasis on hands-on learning, creativity, exploration and discovery in a curriculum that aligns with Ohio’s academic content standards. Although there will be singing around the campfire, time for games and night hikes, this is not a recreational camp or an extended sleepover. This is a learning experience that has been planned to enhance our academic curriculum.

Where: The Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center (CVEEC) sits on 500 acres within the 33,000 acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Located at 3675 Oak Hill Road, Peninsula, Ohio 44264. Transportation will be provided.

When: Monday, March 26, 2018 – Tuesday, March 27, 2018. Students will leave from school on Monday morning and return on Tuesday evening. School transportation will be provided to and from camp. Students will need to be picked up from Garfield Heights Middle School on Tuesday.

Why: The “All the Rivers Run” Level II Curriculum offers an in-depth opportunity to explore environmental issues that are affecting our watersheds in northeast Ohio. Throughout the week, the students examine the way that we, as humans, have impacted the environment. Students are challenged with the task of designing a housing development using low-impact tools. Students use their understanding of watersheds, landforms and low-impact strategies to create a site specific plan.

How: Cost is $75.00 per student for the entire trip. Cash or money order should be made payable to Garfield Heights Board of Education. No personal checks. All money is due by Friday, February 23, 2018. Space is limited to the first 110 students. This includes transportation, lodging, and all meals.
