Maple Leaf Students Grow in Character??????

February Character Education Trait: Compassion and Kindness

In the Garfield Heights City School District, we are committed to teaching our students pro-social behavior and character development. Each month our guidance department facilitates instruction that concentrates on specific areas of character development. Our students are provided with ample opportunities to learn, understand, and practice each trait, both in school and at home.

Compassion and Kindness is the February 2020 Character Education trait. The curriculum for the lessons taught by Ms. Hodge this month was from the Be Kind® Stick Together® program. This is a FREE, character education program offered to schools and youth organizations by Project Love®, Duck Tape® Marc’s, Giant Eagle, AMC Theatre and The Sustar Family foundation in an effort to provide a fun and different way for students to explore the important social-emotional learning concepts of kindness and sticking together to combat bullying and negative behaviors.

Over four days Ms. Hodge taught Maple Leaf students a combination of tools, through large homeroom discussions, hands-on activities and writing exercises that culminated with students pledging to “stick together” by writing their individual names on pieces of Duck Tape and posting them together on the provided banner. This banner, which showcases over 400 Maple Leaf Students' commitment to “stick together” will be displayed in the Maple Leaf cafeteria as a constant reminder to be kind, caring and respectful to each other.
