On Thursday, May 11th, senior students in the Construction Trades Program at Cuyahoga Valley Career Center along with instructor Paul Yuravak were recognized in a ceremony held at the Garfield Heights City Schools Board of Education campus. The students were recognized for their accomplishment in constructing a maintenance garage for the Garfield Heights City Schools. Students included GHHS seniors Tyler Goudat and Jamal Ervin. The 1,500-square foot, 52 x 30-foot structure was hand-built by the students with no outside help or machines. To start the process, the district purchased the building materials and poured the concrete pad that the structure is built upon. The Construction Trades students began building in October and finished in late April, working on the building three days per week in two-hour increments, often in cold weather. With the facility now being complete, it will be used to store maintenance trucks and materials for the Garfield Heights City Schools. Pictures from the ceremony can be found by clicking here.
The ribbon cutting ceremony consisted of congratulatory remarks by administrators from both the district and CVCC, as well as a distribution of plaques to each student to recognize their hard work and achievement. The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Garfield Heights City Schools, including GHCS Superintendent Terry Olszewski, District Treasurer Al Sluka, GHCS Board Members including President Gary Wolske, Vice President Christine Kitson and Robert Dobies Sr. Also present were Cuyahoga Valley Career Center Superintendent Dr. Celena Roebuck, Principal Mike Hall and Assistant Principal Josh Hayes. Elected officials were also in attendance, including State Representative Stephanie D. Howse (District 11) and Garfield Heights Mayor Vic Collova. This was the biggest structure ever built in the history of the CVCC Construction Trades program and the GHCS is grateful to have this new facility for use in the years to come.
