Why are the GHHS Key Club’s Students of Service Collecting Plastic Bread Tabs?

Why are the GHHS Key Club’s students of service collecting plastic bread tabs? And what about those pop tabs?

· In South Africa, the for-profit businesses are required to donate a percentage of their profits to charity. A wheelchair company takes the bread tabs, recycles them for the plastic parts and pieces of a wheelchair, adds its charitable donation…and a special needs child gets a wheelchair. In South Africa, if a child is not mobile, the child gets no formal education. This past summer, we delivered a suitcase full of tabs, good for one wheelchair. It’s easy! We all throw plastic bread tabs away without thinking. Instead, please save them for the high school Key Club.

· And yes, we still save pop tabs. Ronald McDonald House cashes them in to provide necessities for families staying there who have children in Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital for extended periods of time. For example, a Central American family had been staying at RMcD House during the winter while their child received treatment. However, the family had no warm outer wear, having come from a warmer climate. The money from the pop tabs bought them coats, hats, and gloves.

Please consider saving your throwaways! It’s a simple effort, but it gleans results that make a huge difference in a life. And please spread the word. Feel free to use the attached flier regarding the bread tabs.
