Excessive Heat Guidelines

Excessive Heat Guidelines

Dear Bulldog Family,

As the GHCS successfully launches the 2019-2020 School year, the District would like to remind everyone about its excessive heat procedure. While the near-term weather forecast predicts reasonable temperatures for the next several weeks, everyone knows the unpredictable nature of excessive heat and humidity. To be as prepared as possible, district leadership is sharing this set of excessive heat procedures and protocols to ensure that everyone remains out of the danger of improper heat exposure. It is important to understand that ‘discomfort’ and ‘danger’ are different, and the information below will help both keep students and educators as comfortable and safe as possible.

Please be advised that the Heat Index is the critical factor to monitor. The District will be monitoring the Heat Index very closely during this time of the year.

SCHOOL CLOSURE OR EARLY DISMISSAL FOR EXCESSIVE HEAT:

Excessive Heat is a legitimate reason to close school or to release students and educators early, and we will do so if necessary. This should only affect the middle school. All other schools have building wide air conditioning. But if an air conditioning system fails in other buildings, those buildings could be subject to late start or school cancellation due to excessive heat. Under Ohio Law, only the Superintendent has the authority to make the decision to close or delay the start of school.  If a closure or early dismissal from school ever becomes a reality, the GHCS will notify parents and the community immediately.  Staff will be expected to report at their normal times during an excessive heat induced late start or school closure.
