Ms. Boyd Leads CTAG Students on Exciting Chicago College Tour sponsored by College Now.
Ms. Boyd, a dedicated mentor with the CTAG (Closing the Achievement Gap) and College Now programs, recently guided a group of high school students on an exciting, educational trip to Chicago. Garfield was joined by students from Maple Hts. and Shaw high schools. From Sunday, October 13th, to Wednesday, October 16th, students from Garfield Heights High School had the opportunity to visit prestigious colleges, explore the city’s cultural landmarks, and gain valuable insights into college life.
The trip kicked off on Sunday, October 13th, with the students gathering early at Garfield Heights High School. The group’s first stop was the University of Toledo, where they enjoyed lunch at Ottawa East Dining Hall. This break was a perfect introduction to the college atmosphere, allowing students to interact with current university attendees.
Upon arriving in Chicago in the afternoon, the group headed straight to the iconic Willis Tower. There, students experienced breathtaking views of the city from the SkyDeck, one of Chicago's most famous attractions. Dinner followed at the bustling Shake Shack, conveniently located at the base of the tower. After a full day of travel and excitement, the students settled into their hotel, Springhill Suites in Elmhurst, for a well-earned rest.
Monday, October 14th, was filled with academic and cultural experiences. The day began with a visit to Lake Forest College’s Fall Visit Day, where students explored campus life and gained a firsthand look at the college's offerings. The group then headed downtown to Millennium Park to see the famed "Bean" sculpture before embarking on a relaxing architecture boat tour along the Chicago River, highlighting the city’s stunning skyline.
The day concluded with a visit to the famous deep-dish pizzeria, Giordano’s, for dinner. This evening allowed the students to wind down and discuss their future academic aspirations.
On Tuesday, October 15th, the group visited the Shedd Aquarium, one of Chicago's premier attractions, followed by a tour and lunch at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). UIC’s admissions tour and information session offered invaluable insights into college applications, life on campus, and academic programs.
That afternoon, the students enjoyed time at the Lincoln Park Zoo before heading to Activate Chicago, where they wrapped up the day with a lively dinner and activities designed to engage and motivate youth.
The trip culminated on Wednesday, October 16th, with a visit to the prestigious University of Chicago. Students participated in a group admissions tour, toured the campus, and dined at the Baker Dining Commons before making their way back to Ohio, arriving at Garfield Heights High School in the evening.
Throughout the trip, Ms. Boyd and the team from CTAG and College Now ensured students had both educational and fun experiences. This unique opportunity not only opened the students’ eyes to college possibilities but also provided cultural exposure and built lasting memories.
