Elmwood Elementary School is celebrating Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month in a variety of colorful, fun, and educational ways this fall. Recognized each year from September 15 through October 15, every day includes a new and fun opportunity to learn about Hispanic and Latino culture. For example, each day, students learn a new Spanish number, letters, and how to say colors in fun and engaging ways. Since there are 21 flags that represent the culture, students have been participating in a friendly competition to see which class or classes can learn and remember the most Spanish words! Each day, Ms. Smith also selects a Hispanic or Latino student to read the “Flag of the Day” during the school morning announcements. The Flag of the Day includes the country’s name, the colors of its flag, an interesting fact about the country, and something special about its flag.
These daily activities have been a fun way to keep students engaged while helping them learn about the Spanish language and the diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of Hispanic and Latino communities.
This celebration is all building toward our Hispanic & Latino Show and Parade on Friday, October 16, where students, staff, and families will come together to celebrate culture, language, traditions, and community. Spirit week will start on October 8th-October 16th leading up to the Hispanic & Latino Celebration.
