Garfield Heights City School District Receives Grant From Martha Holden Jennings Foundation

Garfield Heights, OH ⸺The Garfield Heights City School District recently received a $1000 opportunity grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation to support the launch of its New Teacher Support Program. This initiative is designed to provide ongoing support and professional development for teachers in their first two years of teaching as well as educators who are new to the district.

“We are honored to receive this support from the Jennings Foundation,” said Shayla Ivezzy, Assistant Principal and Implementation Lead for the New Teacher Support Program. “This grant will allow us to create a collaborative space where new and newly hired teachers can learn, share best practices, and grow in their instructional effectiveness—ultimately enhancing the learning experience for every student in Garfield Heights. It also reflects our commitment to being good stewards of our resources while investing in what matters most.” By focusing on both skill development and community-building, this initiative supports teacher retention and advances the district’s vision for continuous improvement and student success.

The mission of the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, which was established in 1959, is to foster the development of young people to the maximum possible extent in Ohio’s PK-12 public schools and to provide a greater means for accomplishment on the part of Ohio’s teachers by encouraging creativity in teaching and bringing greater recognition to the teaching profession.

Scholars in Ms. Gilliland's Advanced Studio Class are working diligently on their first painting project: Complementary Color Bulldogs. After learning how to set up a palette and creating value scales for a warm up, they are now transporting their complementary colors onto their bulldogs to replace the original colors in the photographs. These vibrant pups feature many of the Elements and Principles of Art and Design, such as Line, Shape, Color, Value, Emphasis, Variety, and Contrast, all while being cute as a button!
