High School Literacy Project

On December 11th, students in Ms. Sizler's Applied English classes traveled to all of the elementary schools in Garfield Heights to culminate their Literacy Project.  The students, ranging from 9th -12th grade, utilized a partnership with the Kids Book Bank (Cleveland) to read and deliver books to the kindergarten students throughout the district.

The Literacy Project, created by Ms. Sizler in collaboration with Principals Hager and Fording, is in its second year.  In October, the high school students traveled to the Kids Book Bank to sort and package 750 children's books.  Over the course of the next six weeks, the students began preparing by reading and practicing their presentations, essentially building confidence in their own literacy skills.  Finally, on December 11th, they were able to present their books and give books to the kindergarten students to take home.

The response was tremendous!  The kindergarten students truly enjoyed being read to.  After choosing their own books to take home, they sat with the high school students and their classmates to read share the new books as well.  The kindergarten students were curious and funny, a great audience for the high school students!
