Superintendent Hanke and Treasurer Sluka Visit Senior Center, Provide Overview and Take Questions

The ongoing relationship between the Garfield Heights City Schools and the City of Garfield Heights Senior Citizen Center takes on a special dynamic at least once each school year when District leadership visits to take questions from members from the community. Such was the case earlier this week, as Superintendent Chris Hanke and Treasurer Al Sluka addressed more than 40 senior citizens at Garfield Heights City Hall and shared an overview of the District and then opened the floor to questions. While on numerous occasions students are spotlight during these special visits, Superintendent Hanke took a moment to introduce his background and near 20-years of service to the Garfield Heights City Schools, prior to becoming Superintendent. He shared a bit about his personal and professional life and then offered an overview of important initiatives underway in the school district, including the strong push for diversity and inclusion as well as the upcoming strategic planning effort. Treasurer Sluka, a 1976 alumnus of the GHCS, gave a brief summary of District finances and provided an update of the razing of the buildings on the southwest corner of Turney Roads and Garfield Heights Boulevard to make way for a new Transportation facility for the District. Afterward, senior citizens had the opportunity to make positive comments and ask questions. Overall, the exchange between Superintendent Hanke and Treasurer Sluka and the senior citizens was a demonstration of community support and engagement. Thank you to all who participated.
