A Message from the Principal - Mr. Sean Patton

November 2016

Dear Families -

As Garfield Heights City Schools moves to the start of the second marking period, the students at William Foster have been working very hard on their reading skills. Throughout the school year students in every grade take a STAR reading test, the results of this test help teachers determine the needs of each student. Students recently took this test and each grade level has shown improvement. We also do this testing in math, parents can help us by making sure everyone is reading each night as well as encourage students to spend 15-20 minutes practicing their math facts.

The mood of the William Foster Elementary School building is focused; our third graders will be taking the AIR Reading Test in the next few weeks. We expect students to come to school prompt and prepared. Accepting responsibility, working hard and showing respect to all is crucial at William Foster, we hold these as our core values and expect this from every student.

Something that is new this year to William Foster is a focus on voice levels, ranging from Level Four- outside voice to Level Zero- no talking. A Level Zero is expected from every student at William Foster when they are in the hallways. We recently had Mrs. Difranco, our art teacher paint a level zero mural outside the cafeteria to help remind our students of this new policy. Parents can ask the students questions about level zero voices and remind students the expectations when they are at school.

Looking forward, our Parent Information Night facilitated by our PTA is coming soon. The first event was held in September where we provided our parents the nuts and bolts of our school. In November, we are going to have a Math night and concentrate on family math night games, we hope to see all of our families there. William Foster will continue to have parent engagement nights throughout the school year, your participation is greatly appreciated.

Finally, William Foster’s All Pro Dads Event will be starting in November and going forward once a month until May. This event is for dads and students to come together once a month, have breakfast and do an activity at school. All Pro Dads meetings will be held on a Friday at 7:15AM in the gym. The first All Pro Dads event will take place on Friday, November 18th. Please be on the lookout for more information from the PTA. November also starts our grade level concerts, first grade will be conducting the first concert on November 17th at 6:00pm, look for more information to follow soon. We look forward to seeing our parents and William Foster families at these events. As always, do not hesitate to reach out to our staff with any questions, we are here to help!
