The department is responsible for coordinating with the service providers in the area who can give to families, usually at no cost, the assistance they need to help their children to be successful in school. The department is also responsible for collaborating with the agencies to make certain that parents and the community are aware of these services and how to access them.

The department also works with staff from the police and fire departments, the office of the mayor, the juvenile justice system, the courts, area hospitals, and children services agencies.
